I would start the year off by letting all my parents now that I will be sending home monthly classroom newsletters. Any information’s such as upcoming assemblies, field trips, or school activities will be included in this newsletter. I would also encourage parents to go through their child’s backpack in the evenings and see what projects they did that day. If any of my parents would be interested in some extra work to do at home with their children I would be more than happy to put some work together that would please them. Family Wiki
My goal as a teacher is too provide the opportunities to my students that they may not receive elsewhere. Children need to have their basic needs met, they need to learn, and have fun doing so otherwise they will never enjoy their educational career. The best way I know for children to enjoy school is to make them feel welcome and comfortable when they come to school. This means having the classroom set up in such a way that it is wide open. The separate centers will be against the walls which leave the middle of the room open for carpet time, building, painting, or class room games. I want my students to succeed and in order to do so I need to be in contact with the families of my students. This means that I make myself available for the parents to talk to even after school hours when it is convenient for them. This includes e-mail, web cam, phone, and my Wiki page. I will also keep in touch and up to date with my colleges so I am aware of things going on in other classes. During the first week of school I will send home a packet of papers for the parents to read through, fill out and send back to me. Among this packet will include an information sheet indicating which times would be best for any face to face meetings, phone conversations and so on. All information in this packet will go into the students personal files. Also included in this packet will be a monthly breakfast and lunch calendar, a monthly news letter that will explain activities going on in the classroom as well as the school. I will also include a volunteer sing up sheet so that parents can come into the class and either observes the going no’s or help with an activity. This should help the parents feel more involved and keep them informed of what their children are learning. This is also a good way for the parents and I to keep in touch. Along with this packet of information I will include various community resources in which the parents and children can take advantage of. Places such as the local Food Banks and their hours of operation, the YMCA and any activities they have going during the next month, the local Museums and the activities they have as well as various health facilities in the area that operate on a sliding scale fee.
